In our latest Broadcast Revolution Event, we had the pleasure of hearing from two of the BBC’s leading financial broadcast journalists Olie D’Albertanson and Ana Lockerbie. Both are part of the BBC’s Money & Work team, and they joined our very own Mike Young to spill the secrets on what makes the ideal guest, and the stories that really grab their attention.
With the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, gearing up to deliver her Spring Statement soon, Olie and Ana had some cracking advice for anyone hoping to land a spot on BBC Breakfast, the News Channel, 5live, or the BBC World Service.
So, what makes a great guest?
Both journalists agreed that being able to break down big financial ideas into relatable, everyday language is crucial.
“We love guests who can make complicated stories simple. If you can explain inflation in a way that makes someone say ‘Ah, now I get it!’, you’re on the right track.”
“We’re not just looking for dry analysis, we want stories. How are these economic issues really affecting people? Bring us those real-life examples, and we’ll listen.”
What kind of stories stick?
Olie and Ana both stressed that timing is everything. They also revealed that fresh data points, unique insights, or even first-hand experiences can make a pitch stand out.
“Being ready to react when breaking financial news hits can be a game-changer. We need experts who can jump in and offer sharp, useful insights when they matter most.”
“Don’t just tell us what’s happening, tell us why it matters.”
What’s your top tips for spokespeople?
“If you can bring all that, we’ll be calling you back” they promised.
Mike also teased our next event, which will dive into all things travel and leisure. Stay tuned for more details!
